Description

Published on the occasion of the exhibition Greater Old Town. 12 Visions (at the Estonian Museum of Architecture, 24.01–3.05.2026), curated by Villem Tomiste.

Curator Villem Tomiste brings into focus 12 visions that have, over time, circled around the city walls. These are ideas intended to broaden the perceived borders and boundaries of Tallinn’s Old Town. In the future, this area may become significantly larger, involving parts of the city whose street network and building fabric are historic. The visions developed through Tomiste’s research are not final solutions, but signs of Tallinn’s spatial dynamics. The exhibition is an attempt to create a dialogue between different ways of relating to the city, with responses from 12 artists.

The catalogue Greater Old Town brings together the urban spatial visions presented in the exhibition as well as the works of twelve artists engaged as dialogue parters. For the publication, art historian Šelda Puķīte has written the essay Worldbuilding dwellers in the city of art and the catalogue also includes the Solarpunk Manifesto.
